What does a psychiatric evaluation involve?

A first psychiatric evaluation is a long conversation, not a test. Ours is 50 minutes with your psychiatrist, in person or by video, and it ends with a plan you agree with.

Step by step

1  Request a time

Call or text (626) 681-3729, or request an appointment online. We reply within one business day and check your insurance benefits before your first visit.

2  Complete your forms

Intake forms arrive before your visit, in English or Spanish.

3  The evaluation

Fifty minutes on what is going on now, when it started, your sleep, energy and mood, your medical history, medications you take or have tried, and what you want to change.

4  A plan you agree with

Medication, a therapy referral, or both. You and your psychiatrist decide on it together.

5  Follow-up visits

Twenty-five minutes. We track your symptoms at follow-ups and change the plan when it is time, with attention to sleep, nutrition, movement and stress alongside medication.

What types of psychiatric services are available in Los Angeles?

Psychiatric care in Los Angeles comes in a few forms: outpatient practices like ours for scheduled visits, county services through the Department of Mental Health, and crisis and hospital care for emergencies. The right one depends on how urgent things are and on your coverage.

Outpatient psychiatry

Scheduled visits for evaluation, diagnosis, medication management and follow-up, in an office or by video. This fits when you are safe and want ongoing care with one doctor.

County mental health services

The Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health runs a Help Line for service referrals and crisis assessments, open 24/7.

(800) 854-7771

If you have Medi-Cal, which we do not accept, your plan or the Help Line can connect you with care.

Crisis support

If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at any hour.

988

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Hospital and day programs

Some people need more than scheduled visits, such as a hospital stay or an intensive day program. We do not provide those. If you need that level of care, we tell you and help with a referral.

Where can I find a board-certified psychiatrist in Los Angeles?

Dr. Veronica Sanchez, MD, at Prescribed Wellness Psychiatry is a board-certified psychiatrist accepting new adult patients in Los Angeles, and every psychiatrist in the group is a physician (MD or DO). You can check any psychiatrist’s credentials yourself with two free lookups before you book.

Board certification

The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology certifies psychiatrists. Search any doctor by name in its free verifyCERT tool. Check certification at ABPN

California medical license

The Medical Board of California shows whether a license is current and lists public disciplinary actions. Look up a license

Questions people in Los Angeles ask

More answers on our FAQ page and in the concierge psychiatry guide.

How do I get a psychiatric evaluation near me in Los Angeles?

Call or text (626) 681-3729, or request an appointment online. We reply within one business day and check your insurance benefits before your first visit. The evaluation is 50 minutes, in person at 3800 Barham Blvd in Los Angeles or by secure video anywhere in California.

Do I need a referral to see a psychiatrist in Los Angeles?

Usually not. Most PPO plans let you book with an in-network psychiatrist directly. Some HMO and Medicare Advantage plans require a referral from your primary care doctor. We check this when we verify your benefits, before your first visit, so you know where you stand.

Which insurance plans do you take?

We are in network with Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross, Carelon Behavioral Health, Cigna, Optum, UnitedHealthcare and Medicare. We do not accept Medi-Cal, L.A. Care or Kaiser Permanente. For other plans we provide a superbill you can submit for reimbursement, and self-pay visits come with a Good Faith Estimate before your first appointment.

Is there a Spanish-speaking psychiatrist in Los Angeles?

Yes. Dr. Sanchez sees patients in English or Spanish, in person or by video. Spanish-speaking callers can call or text (626) 681-3729, and intake forms are available in Spanish.

Can I see a psychiatrist by video in Los Angeles?

Yes. A video visit is the same appointment you would have in the office, from your phone, tablet or computer. You need to be physically in California during the visit, and prescriptions are sent electronically to the pharmacy you choose. You can switch between video and office visits.

Do you treat adult ADHD?

Yes. Adult ADHD evaluation, diagnosis and medication management are a regular part of the practice, in person or by video. An evaluation is a full conversation about your history, school and work, sleep and what you have already tried.

What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a therapist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who diagnoses mental health conditions and can prescribe medication. A therapist, such as a psychologist, a licensed clinical social worker or a marriage and family therapist, provides talk therapy, usually every week or two. Many people see both. Our visits include brief therapeutic conversation alongside medication management.

Do you see children or teenagers?

Soon. Child and adolescent psychiatrists are joining Prescribed Wellness Psychiatry in the coming weeks. Today, Dr. Veronica Sanchez sees adults 18 and over. If you are looking for care for a child or teenager, call or text (626) 681-3729 and we will tell you when booking opens.

Is Prescribed Wellness Psychiatry a group practice?

Yes. Prescribed Wellness Psychiatry is a physician-owned psychiatry group led by Dr. Veronica Sanchez, MD. Five more psychiatrists, all physicians (MD or DO), are joining in the coming weeks, adding child and adolescent psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry.

Is there a concierge option?

Yes. Alongside in-network care, we offer a private-pay concierge membership with extended visits and direct communication with Dr. Sanchez, and an optional holistic mental health program backed by published research. Membership does not change clinical decisions, and it is not available to Medicare or Medi-Cal beneficiaries.

What are your hours?

The office is open Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, and closed Saturday and Sunday. Call or text (626) 681-3729 during office hours, or request an appointment online at any time. If you are in crisis, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or go to the nearest emergency room.
